Labor costs and transition waste

Moving trays between seeding, germination, transplanting, harvesting, and washing by hand is one of the biggest costs in a typical indoor farm. Poor operational flow and incomplete automation compound the problem: first-generation vertical farms that scale before their systems catch up often end up discarding half of what they grow, losing as much as $4 million a year to transition waste alone.

Scaling and safety limits

Heavy reliance on manual labor caps how far an operation can scale. Reaching upper tiers of traditional vertical racking requires scissor lifts or order pickers, which slows every task, raises labor cost per unit, complicates cleaning, and puts workers at real risk.

Patchwork, single-crop systems

Stitching together equipment from different manufacturers rarely integrates cleanly. Many of these systems are large, expensive, and built around one or two crop types, leaving growers unable to adapt when local demand shifts. Legacy automation manufacturers may not build and design custom products that fit your crop types, tray sizes, or capacity.

Cost, ROI, and downtime risk

Traditional commercial automation runs $50,000 to $500,000 per machine with a payback period of three to five years or more, pricing most small and mid-sized farms out entirely. And because these systems are complex and tightly integrated, one broken component can stop the whole farm, while vendors often refuse to service mixed-brand setups or share the IP needed to fix them, leaving growers stranded.
